From the Porch
Here’s what some of our residents have been seeing lately. What have you seen?
Have you ever seen a bald Blue Jay? (Though fascinating, it’s not a pretty sight.)
Apparently Jays molt yearly, but it’s usually a gradual process. A few of these poor kids go bald all at once. We’ve seen one at our backyard feeder this season.
Cardinals are sometimes spotted in this embarrassing state from time to time.
Why do we spend so much time in Maine? This is the view from our west-facing window. Not every evening, mind you, but often enough to keep us wondering why we ever leave.
This news from the Haights on Paul Bunyan Road:
“A river otter came ashore this spring on Paul Bunyan Road, looked around and high-tailed it back to the water.”
SO CUTE, right? Twin fauns! And right here in the backyard this Spring. They grow up quickly… to eat dahlias, and hydrangeas, and asparagus, and…
The Bierzychudek-McKeag property on Roaring Brook Road has been a hotbed of porcupine activity for the past few months.
Triple-fenced gardens seem to present no more than a small tactical exercise for these voracious varmints.
If this character is seen in your neck of the woods, please keep it there.
Some days the bay is just like glass. Do yourself a favor, and get out there! The migrating birds are wonderful to see.
Town Issues
Gouldsboro is working to stay on top of issues that are important to all residents. Check the town’s website for additional info.
When the Gouldsboro Board of Selectmen met on Thursday, August 31st, 2023, they voted to approve the proposal Bill Zoellick (Volunteer Manager of the Gouldsboro Shore Initiative) presented, to establish the Gouldsboro Climate Resilience Committee. This volunteer citizen committee will coordinate activities to reduce energy use and costs and transition to clean energy, making the community more resilient to climate change. They will serve as the primary point of contact with the state’s Community Resilience Partnership.
Priorities include feasibility studies and actions to protect local roads and culverts against sea level rise, and to support the broadband plan providing high speed internet access to all. Check back for updates on the committee’s progress.
